Matt Mueller, Baritone

Up-and-coming bass Matt Mueller is garnering attention for his ‘larger-than-life’ stage presence and soulful interpretations across a diverse repertoire ranging from Monteverdi and Mozart to the vanguard of new music.

Matt’s recent successes include a stint as Resident Professional Artist with the Ohio Light Opera, where he played a remarkably divergent suite of roles, headlined by leading-man Lancelot in the company’s latest reprisal of Camelot (Lerner & Loewe) under the guidance of visionary artistic director Stephen Daigle. This contrasted with the campy, comedic foil Dick Deadeye in director Spencer Reese’s romping take on H.M.S. Pinafore (Gilbert & Sullivan).

Beyond the realms of operetta and golden age music theatre, Matt has taken on more weighty material in recent presentations of new and seldom-performed work, featuring in world-premiere productions ICELAND (O-Lan Jones/Emmett Tinley) and Transgression (G. Janecek) at La MaMa Experimental Theatre and Bluegrass Opera (KY), respectively, as well as a string of concerts organized by the dell’Arte Opera Ensemble (NY) that spotlight the works of little-known Slavic composers Reinhold Glière and Mykola Lysenko.

Among Matt’s recent highlights are featured roles such as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande and Pluton in J.P. Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie, as well as appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Opera Theater and Florentine Opera.

Matt has had the privilege to perform under the direction of a number of essential and influential artists; standouts include Jaap van Zweden, Crystal Manich, and Joseph Rescigno, among many others.

In the current season, Matt is proud to champion a number of new works—several of which receive their premieres—from a set of composers including Judith Shatin, Trevor Weston and Joseph Turrin, the latter of which is set to be recorded by Musica Viva (NY) in December 2023 (Naxos, commercial release expected 2024).

Matt did his graduate studies in voice at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Prior to that, he studied piano at the University of Oklahoma.
